scriptions against homosexuality. It also directed her to a website for Most Holy Family Monastery, from whom she also received a DVD warning of damnation.

Demartini has apparently had a similar issue before. According to the Transgender Law Center's Kristina Wertz, in 2009 he refused to handle a name change application for another transgender woman, and told her she was going to hell.

Smithsonian yanks AIDS video

Washington, D.C.-The Smithsonian is being accused of cowardice and censorship for removing a four-minute video by David Wojnarowicz from a privately-funded show on identity, gender and homosexuality in portraiture in America.

The video shows staccato flashes of various clips, like masks, objects on fire, a meatpacking plant and Wojnarowicz undressing. It is a meditation on his impending death from AIDS-related complications. He died in 1992.

However, one of the clips is an 11-second image of ants crawling on a crucifix, which the anti-gay Catholic League, not connected to the church, called "hate speech."

Cincinnati Rep. John Boehner, who will be the Speaker of the House once the Republican majority takes control in January, threatened "tough scrutiny" of the Smithsonian if they did not pull the video.

The Smithsonian removed the video from the exhibit, with secretary G. Wayne Clough saying that it "was detracting from the entirety of the exhibition," according to the New York Times.

Lt. Dan Choi is in the hospital

Brockton, Mass.-Lt. Dan Choi, whose ongoing battle for repealing the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy has made national headlines, is undergoing psychological treatment in a Veterans Administration hospital after a "breakdown and anxiety attack."

He sent e-mails to gay reporters Rex Wockner and Pam Spaulding saying that while he was, at first, reluctant to publicize the matter, "I now realize it is critical for our community to know several things: veterans gay or straight carry human burdens. Activists share similar burdens, no activist should be portrayed as super human, and the failures of government and national lobbying carry consequences far beyond the careers and reputations of corporate leaders, elected officials, high powered lobbyists, or political elites. They ruin lives."

Choi said that he was involuntarily committed; he went in of his own volition, but he will not be released until he is given clearance by a doctor. He went in on December 10.

New Hungary constitution bans vows

Budapest-The first eastern European nation to recognize same-sex common-law marriages is doing an about-face, with its newly-elected government putting forward a new draft constitution that enshrines strict conservative Christian principles.

The governing center-right Fidesz party is in a coalition with the Christian Democratic People's Party; the two together won a two-thirds majority in the national assembly last April.

The proposed constitution would has provisions defining marriage as an opposite-sex institution, as well as right to life from conception, and noting Christianity's formative force in Hungary's millenniumlong history.

It is unknown what effect the proposed changes would have on Hungary's membership in the European Union, which has strong human rights rules. European intellectuals warn that Hungary's ruling coalition "is busy dismantling the rule of law and eroding a fragile democratic political culture," according to an editorial in the British Guardian newspaper.
